HEARTBURN
Heartburn occurs when stomach acid overflows and irritates the sensitive tissue in your esophagus. If you have heartburn, you probably feel a burning sensation that rises from your stomach and moves into your chest and neck. You might even experience a bitter taste in your mouth and/or feel a fullness in your chest. Common heartburn triggers include high fat, acidic and fried foods. Also topping the list are dairy, caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.
Beyond diet, heartburn is commonly caused by gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), carrying extra weight, hiatal hernias, pregnancy, stress, smoking, prescription medications, vigorous exercise and it becomes more common with age.
Non-medicated ways you can fight heartburn:
- Eat healthy, regular meals and remember to eat slowly.
- Cut down on the things you know cause symptoms, like fried and fatty foods, carbonated and alcoholic beverages.
- Always, always, always, drink plenty of water. It dilutes stomach acid.
- Shed those extra pounds. It makes a world of difference.
- Use gravity to your advantage by NOT lying down right after a meal.
- Wait a little while after eating before engaging in any sports or strenuous activities, too.
