ACID INDIGESTION

Indigestion is tricky. For most people, there really is no medical reason why they suffer from it. There are a few things to look for, though. It could be as simple as wearing clothing that's too tight. This can put too much pressure on your stomach and keep your belly from being able to do its job. Also, you could have an underlying problem that needs to be treated by a doctor. For example, indigestion may be related to an ulcer, inflammation of your stomach or duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) hiatus hernia or, heaven forbid, cancer of the GI (gastrointestinal) tract. You should see your doctor if you suspect such underlying conditions. Certain medicines can also cause indigestion. NSAIDs (aspirin and ibuprofen) are common culprits.

Your diet plays a major role in digestion, too. Common causes of indigestion include the usual suspects; too heavy of meals, spicy, fatty and fried foods, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks, citrus fruits like oranges, pineapple and tomatoes (yes, tomatoes are a fruit). Also, pregnancy, obesity and smoking can be major contributors.

Non-medicated ways you can fight acid indigestion:
  • Eat smaller, regular meals. And eat slowly.
  • Reduce the fatty foods, carbonated and alcoholic beverages in your diet.
  • Stop smoking, for more reasons than just indigestion.
  • Limiting your caffeine intake can really help.
